To the outside world, India is a place of different cultures and different ethnicities. But what is not so apparent from outside is how much patriarchy is still present in this country. Almost in all the modern countries, women hold a similar social and economic position as men, but it not the same here in India. So, to come out of a society like this and become a successful fashion designer is a hopeless dream for most women. That is exactly what Vinieta Bhatia (fashion designer) has done. This is something that young girls of today dream about.

The struggles at home

For any girl child born in India, the first battle is always in her own house. It is not that her parents don’t love her; they love her as much as they would love any boy child of theirs. But the problem lies in the basic societal structure in this country, girls are supposed to be the house-wives, who are brought up to cater to the family’s needs more than anything else. They are taught how to do household chores and cook. This is what Vinieta Bhatia (fashion designer) had to fight through. She had to face this patriarchal society and work her way into the fashion designing industry, and now she is one of the most famous designers in the country.

Changing distress into hope

She had an eye for artistic designs and modelling from a very young age. Vinieta Bhatia managed to get a seat in a reputed art college but her dad did not allow her to leave the town to study there. All she had left was a dream to succeed. She started doodling dress designs on a notebook and ended up drawing a wedding dress which her mom loved. They showed this design to everyone and their unanimous praise gave her the confidence that she needed. She already knew how to sew, and using this skill she started to tailor dresses based on her designs. This got her the opportunity of a lifetime to study in the National Institute for Fashion Technology, and this time her tenacity and passion for the craft convinced her parents to let her go and follow her dreams.

A beacon of hope

Very few have ever accomplished what Vinieta Bhatia (fashion designer) has done in her age and in her situation. While studying in college there was a Fashion Designing competition in which her designs won everyone’s hearts. The judges even said that she was not just the best there, but she had a flair that was not present in most designers. She went on to work with one of the most famous designers in the country and after making a name for herself, she started her own line-up. Her designs have been showcased in numerous prestigious events in the country and in Asia. Her present target is to get worldwide fame for her work and it is something that she will soon achieve. Very few people are as dedicated and as meticulous as her, and she has become an icon for the present generation.
